Five-Paragraph Essay Outline Template
The five-paragraph essay is the standard school format: an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. It is rigid on purpose. The shape teaches you to give each idea its own space and to state a clear thesis.

Template structure
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Hook, brief context, and a thesis that previews your three points.
Paragraph 2: First point
Topic sentence, evidence, explanation, and a link back to the thesis.
Paragraph 3: Second point
Same structure, with a transition from the first point.
Paragraph 4: Third point
Often the strongest or most surprising point.
Paragraph 5: Conclusion
Restate the thesis, tie the three points together, and end on why it matters.
Tips
- Make each topic sentence a mini-claim, not a topic label.
- Use one example per point rather than several shallow ones.
- Use transitions that show relationships, such as "however" or "as a result".
- Do not add new evidence in the conclusion.
