Template structure
Opening scene
Introduce the main character, setting, and what they want.
Inciting incident
The event that disturbs the character's normal life.
Rising action
Two or three attempts, each with more at stake.
Climax
The moment of greatest tension and a choice that reveals character.
Falling action
Immediate consequences of the climax.
Resolution
The changed situation, ending on an image rather than an explanation.
Tips
- Decide the final image before you start.
- Give your character a want and an obstacle.
- Start as close to the inciting incident as you can.
- Cut any scene that does not change something.
